Original Watercolor Painting of Tulips

Watercolor Painting of Red Tulips in Terra Cotta Pots

Red tulips seem like holiday flowers to me.
These were painted in watercolor on Fabriano CP watercolor paper,
using a variety of paint brands:  Winsor & Newton, Sennellier, Schmincke, etc.
I don't use just one paint brand.  The colors vary so much between brands.
For example, Hookers Green by Graham is remarkably different
from Hookers Green by Grumbacher.
So I make lots and lots of color charts, and then choose the swatches that
I like best.  I think I have favorites from almost every paint brand:
Winsor & Newton, Sennellier, Schmincke, Grumbacher, Graham, DaVinci,
David Smith, and a few others.

Lavender Flowers in Glass Cup

Lavender Flowers in Glass Cup
Pale, pastel purple garden flowers, plopped into a glass cup...
a simple, casual bouquet from grandma's garden,
my favorite kind of bouquet.
Painted on Fabriano CP watercolor paper, using a variety
of watercolor brands:  Winsor & Newton, Sennellier,
Schmincke, Grumbacher, and others.
A print of this painting is available in my Etsy shop.

Wildflower Watercolor Painting

Bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush and Yellow Primrose
Some of my favorite Texas wildflowers
Painted in watercolor, of course, on
Fabriano CP watercolor paper
These wonderful wildflowers cannot possibly be an accident.
They volunteer themselves, without any help from us,
in the fields and along the roads all over Texas,
often in the most inhospitable sandy, rocky places.

Peonies Watercolor Painting

Peonies in a Teacup
A watercolor painting of some garden Peonies
in a teacup.  I prefer casual flower arrangements, like
a clump of flowers freshly picked from the garden,
plopped in a teacup or an old glass jar,
the way your grandma used to do it.  Makes me
much happier than a fancy formal arrangement.  This
painting was painted on Fabriano CP watercolor
paper using a variety of watercolor brands:
Winsor & Newton, Sennellier, Schmincke, etc.
Garden flowers are food for the soul, made of peace
and serenity.  They say to me:  "Take care of yourself, old woman."

Periwinkles Watercolor Painting

Periwinkles
These are my favorite summer flowers.  I call them Periwinkles.
Some people call them Vinca.  They have the happiest little faces!
They bloom beautifully here in Texas because
they don't mind the intense heat and sunshine.
These were painted in watercolor on Fabriano cold-pressed
watercolor paper, using a variety of professional watercolor paints
made by Winsor & Newton, Schmincke, Sennellier and others.

Country Mailbox in the Bluebonnets

Here is a watercolor of an old country mailbox
in the bluebonnets.  Two things I love.
We didn't have a big crop of bluebonnets in our area
this year, but it was enough to make me
want to paint them.  It happens every year.
Just love wildflowers.  They are such a gift!

Watercolor Painting of Flowers in Teacups

This is an original watercolor painting of three teacups
full of spring flowers, painted on Fabriano CP watercolor paper
using a variety of watercolor brands, such as Winsor & Newton,
Schmincke, Grumbacher and Sennellier.
I started with a pencil drawing, using a very fine point mechanical pencil, and
I deliberately left most of my original pencil sketch lines,
because I like the casual effect that they leave.

and her wonderful fiancé Tony.
Plopped into one of my lovely old white
ironstone pitchers.  A perfect combination.

using mostly Winsor and Newton artist's paints,
using my favorite soft pink and green shabby chic color palette.

Pastel Roses Watercolor Painting

Watercolor Roses
Experimenting with roses.  I find them a very difficult
flower to paint, so I'm always trying a new approach.

Sunflowers in Glass

Sunflowers
Painted in watercolor on Fabriano cold-pressed watercolor paper,
using Winsor & Newton, Sennelier and Grumbacher paints.
We're finally warming up here in Texas Hill Country.
The bluebonnets are just arriving along the roadsides, and as soon as
it gets really hot, the wild sunflowers will start to sprout.
So happy to see the end of the freezing temperatures.

Watercolor Painting of Flowers

I was really honored and tickled this week when a lady named Laura Jolna
featured my watercolors in her blog entitled "Bella Bella Vita".
It's a blog about things that inspire her - art, food, etc. Here's a link to her blog: http://www.bellabellavita.com/2014/03/artist-spotlight-floral-bouquets-of.html?
Thank you, Laura!  You made my day!

Sunflowers Watercolor Painting

Prints of this watercolor are now available
in my Etsy shop.
I couldn't paint yellow flowers without my favorite yellow paint,
Winsor & Newton Quin Yellow.  It's a must for all watercolorists.
Here in Texas we are anxiously awaiting spring,
and I'm looking forward to the heat of summer,
when these fabulous yellow wildflowers will pop up again.
